The Organizing Committee is pleased to invite you to the 17th International PhD Seminar on Chromatographic Separation Science (SoCSS 2022).

The seminar will take place on June 27-29, 2022 in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ettlingen (near Karlsruhe), Germany.

SoCSS is a seminar for presentation and discussion of research in the field of chromatography and allied techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work and build their professional network in a relaxed and casual environment. It is anticipated to attract young researchers all over the world in the relevant field. The exchange with fellows and the established network will be beneficial to shape their future development as next-generation experts. Seminar participation is however not limited to PhD students. Master students, postdocs and alumni from industry are also very welcome to share their scientific contributions and provide valuable feedback.

Presentations will cover a wide range of topics relevant to cutting-edge research, new technologies, and emerging areas in the following fields:

  • Fundamentals of chromatography / Process engineering
    • Process development, intensification and scale-up
    • High-throughput (HTP) approaches and solutions
    • Continuous processing
  • Computational methods
    • Chromatography modeling, simulation and optimization
    • Model-based process design and control
    • Machine learning
  • Alternative separation methods and modifications
    • Liquid-liquid chromatography (LLC)
    • 3D printed stationary phases
    • Novel separation/interaction techniques
  • Analytical techniques
    • Method development
    • Process analytical technology (PAT)

Call for abstracts + Registration

The SoCSS seminar has been established as forum for current PhD students from the area of chromatography to share their work and connect with peers. Every PhD student is invited to give a presentation about their work (approx. 15 min talk + 5 min questions and discussion). The organizing committee highly encourages all registrants to submit an abstract for a conference talk. There will be no possibility for a poster session.

To register, please consider the following steps. Registration is open until June 10th 2022. The deadline for abstract submission is May 31st 2022. Please note that a hotel room is not included in the registration fee and each participant has to book their own room (costs: 218 €). Further details on hotel reservation will be provided after registration.

After registrations have been processed, a final agenda will be arranged and all speakers will be informed about their assigned time slot and session information.

If you have any questions regarding the seminar or the presentation format, please direct your questions to laura.kuger∂kit.edu.

We are looking forward to your submission.

Workshops

This year, the seminar programme is extended to offer workshops to all participants of the SoCSS for the first time. The exact topics will be available on our website at the beginning of May. If you would like to participate in one or more workshops, please register by mail to Laura Kuger (laura.kuger∂kit.edu) after the announcement. We are looking forward to your numerous participations.

Seminar fees

Thanks to our sponsors, the registration fee for all participants is kept as low as possible. The fees are 50 € for participants from academia, 100 € for PhD students from industry and 250 € for other participants. The fees include access to all workshops and talks, meals and a social event.

SoCSS in the past

The seminar was founded by Prof. Henner Schmidt-Traub1, Prof. Klaus Unger2, and Dr. Reinhard Ditz3 in 2001 and initially named as “PhD Seminar Preparative Chromatography”. Prof. Massimo Morbidelli4 and Prof. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern5 have been showing great dedication to the seminar organization and it has been eventually renamed as International PhD Seminar on Chromatographic Separation Science (SoCSS). Currently, the seminar is organized annually throughout Europe, mainly in Germany.

Covid-19

The SoCSS is planned as a live event in Karlsruhe as we believe that a return to meeting people in person is of great importance for the scientific community. Of course, we take the pandemic situation seriously and the safety and health of SoCSS participants are of utmost importance to us. Access to SoCSS will require an EU digital COVID certificate or a negative antigen test result. During the presentations, a safety distance of 1.5m will be maintained. Further rules, such as the wearing of masks, will be announced at short notice according to the current situation in June. During SoCSS the rules valid in Baden-Württemberg, Germany will be followed (see here).

Registration fees will be refunded if the event needs to be canceled due to the corona pandemic.
