Summer School 2021: "Textile and Dye"

Every year billions of garments are produced worldwide. But how are these clothes made and what happens when we don’t need them anymore? Woollen clothes are made of wool which is obtained from sheep and other animals. Cotton plants grown only in few countries on Earth; cotton fibers are obtained from these plants. If you look at the labels on your other clothes, it might say “Made of Viscose” or “Made of polyamide”. But viscose and polyamide do not grow on trees or sheep. These are made of synthetic fibers. Where did the idea of using synthetic fibers came from? Who discovered first synthetic fibers? How garments are available in almost every color? How are textiles dyes produced? Is it better for the environment to buy cotton textiles or synthetic ones? If you are eager to know the answers to these questions, you are welcome to join our Summer School this July and find out. Summer School offers one day to spend in the laboratory, perform experiments, conduct interactive exercises and listen to a lecture from science ambassador and Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow. Application is open only to schoolteachers. Schoolchildren and their parents cannot apply for participation on their own.
